DO YOU KNOW YOUR TARGET AUDIENCE?

Scroll to end for a quick read summary and top tip.

Reading time approx. 1.5 minutes.

Why knowing your target audience is vital and how to attract them.

Have you ever stood in a room full of people and felt like the odd one out? I have. It’s not great but it happens. It certainly feels better when the room is full of like-minded humans. This is what targeting is all about.

You need to find the rooms, categories, themes, tones, interests, that your ideal customers associate themselves with. It is a massive waste of everyone's time if you advertise to a room full of dog owners when you’re advertising cat food for example. There may be the odd cat owner in there but it’s not the best ‘room’ for your products.

So how do you find your room full of cat owners? The answer to that is data. This is where my inner science-nerd comes out to play! Find out what cat owners like (apart from cats); do they like country music or classical? Cards games, online shopping, do they drive a car? How old are they typically? Do they tend to have children?

The more information you gather the better chance you’ll have at targeting correctly, or shall I say more accurately. Ask your past clients. Listen to what they tell you. As much as you love to play sports at the weekend, if none of them agree with you, don’t write about it on your website, socials and advertising. If they love a certain musical, drop a little hint to ‘Cats’ to make that connection.

Quick Read Summary:

Find out as much as possible about your current audience by asking them.
Use what you find to get more of the same clients by speaking their language.

TOP TIP: if you haven’t had many previous clients/customers or are looking to shift your audience, write down how your ideal client would look instead and target that.

If you find you have all your data and feel stuck with what to do next drop me a message. I’ll get it clear in your head again :)
